Bringing Your Pet in for Surgery or a Dental? Here’s What You Need to Know:

Things to do prior to surgery:

If your pet goes to a groomer, or if you bathe him/her regularly, consider doing it a few days prior to the surgery, as you will be instructed to keep the incision dry following surgery.

Prepare your home for your patient. Make sure you have an area in your house ready for recovery. This could mean separating your cat/dog from other pets, getting your pet’s crate set up, and/or washing your pet’s bedding to help lower the risk of infection.

No food after 10:00 p.m. the night before surgery. To ensure your pet doesn’t eat anything, please keep them indoors, or confined, the night before surgery. No water on the morning of the surgery. Eating and drinking could cause your pet to aspirate (vomit) during anesthesia, which is potentially life-threatening.

You will receive a text/email reminder that will include the Surgery Consent form. Please take the time to fill out and submit it prior to the day of surgery, this will ensure a smoother process the morning of drop-off for you and your pet.

Check-in time is 7:30am – 8:30am the morning of the procedure.

For your pet’s safety please make sure he/she is leashed or in a carrier. Admission typically takes around 20 minutes to complete. Double-check that we have the right contact number for you so that they can reach out with any updates.

What to Expect the Day of Surgery:
    1. Your pet will be with us for one or more hours before surgery (this time will be used to do any additional testing, blood work, catheter placement, etc.) and will spend the appropriate amount of time with us recovering from surgery.

2. Routine surgery pick-up will be same day.

3. For orthopedics and other major surgeries, we may require your pet to stay overnight or longer depending on the procedure.

4. A surgery tech will call you with your pet’s update & time to pick-up. We will give you both verbal and written instructions for the post-surgery care.
